GENERAL INFORMATION for CAPE TOWN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Cape Town
Flight Information Enquiries +27 21 934 0407

Cape Town International Airport is situated on the Cape Flats just East of Cape Town CBD. The airport is the central hub for all domestic and international flights in and out of the Western Cape. International Departures is situated on the Northern End of the Airport Terminal and car rental companies are situated just outside the International and Domestic Arrivals Terminals. Airport shuttles services are also available to and from the airport for your personal or corporate transport. Visitors are to note that there is no direct rail link to Cape Town airport that links it to the city.

If you are renting a car; access to the N2 route (this route runs from Cape Town up our East coast to Durban) is just off the airport and access to the N1 route (this route links Cape Town to Johannesburg) is via the R300 just to the East of the airport.

If you would like to know what the weather will be like on your arrival, see our weather link here.

LOCATION

The airport is situated approximately 10 minutes drive from Cape Town City Center and 20 minutes drive to the Helderberg and the Cape Winelands. General aircraft arrival approaches to the airport are either from over False Bay in the Winter Season (Table Mountain on the left) or from Table Bay in the Summer Season (Table Mountain on the right) . Both airport approaches offer passengers a view of Table Mountain and the Cape Peninsula and often pilots would treat you to a glimpse of Cape Point on arrival. Weather and air traffic permitting.

Luxury bus transfers and hotel transfers are available from the airport arrival terminal. Taxi services are also available (please ensure you use a registered taxi service). Look for clearly marked vehicles registered as taxis.

If you are transferring to a domestic flight on arrival you will have to move to the South end of the airport terminal building from where your flight will depart. If your flight is only later on in the day why not go and do some shopping and have a meal at one of the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront restaurants. A drive there should not take longer than 20 minutes and you could always catch a taxi back to the airport later. Remember to check your transfer flight's departure time with the domestic airline. Take a note of the domestic airline's local phone number at the airport. It may also help to book in your luggage first (if it is not automatically transferred) at the desk of the domestic airline.

There are mobile phone vendors from which you can rent mobile phones at the International Arrivals terminal. Please visit the shopping areas in the arrivals terminal.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Cape Town airport is currently undergoing a major transformation in anticipation of 2010 and the terminal buildings are being expanded and new undercover parking bays are added to the International and domestic side of the terminal buildings.

Weather. Summer temperatures can rise to 35 degrees Celsius. Fortunately the Cape is renown for it's days where the South Easterly wind cools down temperatures during the day and the breeze also clears the city of smog. This South Easterly breeze normally only picks up at about 14h00 onward. So if you're heading for a day at the beach we recommend that you go to the beach in the morning and visit some sights or take a wine route tour in the afternoons.

Tap water is perfectly safe to drink at the airport as it is in most of the province. There is no need to rely only on bottled spring water, tap water is safe to drink in the Cape Town region.

Its impossible to experience Cape Town and all it has to offer in one day. There is simply too much too see and to explore, a minimum 3-5 day visit is recommended, and we recommend that you go explore the province as opposed to only staying over in the CBD. Self-drive holiday options are perfect idea, our roads are generally in a good condition and you don't need a 4x4 to get around to most towns. Get a map, rent a car and head out to explore.  There are only two main roads in and out of the city, the N2 heading east along our coast and the N1 heading North. If you get lost, just make your way back to these main highways and you should be fine. The high mountains in the area are good navigation points to use to orientate yourself in the Cape Peninsual.

See our Tourism Tips and Advice Page if you are going to rent a car in Cape Town.
