Strandfontein - This stretch of beach is mainly used by anglers (follow the R310 West) Wind surfing, jet ski-ing, surfing, , swimming on Western side of beach. Limited beach facilities. |
Muizenberg Beach - This beach
actually starts at Strandfontein and runs along through to
Muizenberg Corner. Restaurants, tourism bureau, surf shop along beach
front. Perfect for surfing long boards.
St James Beach, a small beach, popular for sun tanning and for swimming and has a popular surfing spot on the Northern side of the beach. |
On toward Fish Hoek - Some good surf found here especially in the corner. A short stroll from the village, restaurants and safe for swimming and sun bathing.
Another photo of Fish Hoek beach taken toward the village. See the clean left break! |
Kommetjie (above) runs into Long Beach and has fantastic surf. The beach is popular with locals and is safe for swimming and surfing. Walking distance from shops, and a short drive from restaurants.
On we go, now toward the little town of Scarborough passing the light house at Kommetjie down below. Also a popular surf spot if you not bothered by kelp and the sea currents are pretty strong. Not recommended for the faint hearted or unfit. |
Following the Western Coast, Southward, you'll get another stunning beach near the "crayfish factory". Very good surf, a nice beach, limited facilities. Closest restaurants about 5 minutes drive. Pack a picnic and some good wine from the Cape winelands.
Looking South toward the Cape Of Good Hope Nature Reserve (Cape Point) lies "Misty Cliffs" A popular surf spot with experienced surfers. Pretty rocky though with a few small sandy beach coves. |
Scarborough, a broad sandy beach (about 2km long) good surf and safe swimming close to beach. Be Careful of strong currents. (speak to the locals.) A lovely seafood restaurant a short walk from the beach.
Over the neck of the mountain we go, and down toward Simonstown (Naval town). Here you can see (looking North) the many smaller bays of the Western side of False Bay. |
Simonstown! Driving on through town takes you on to some lovely little bays and a few surf spots close to Cape Point. The town itself is well worth stopping by in. Lovely coffee shops, pubs and restaurants.

In summer you would generally not need a wet suit in the Cape unless you are surfing on the West Coast where the water temperatures can get pretty refreshing. The False Bay surf spots and further Eastward offer pleasant water temperatures and wet suits are generally not needed here.
