Cape Town and
Peninsula - General Information
The Cape Peninsula is renown
for it's stretched out beaches, lining our coastline in white, sun bleached
sand attracting tourists from across the globe that come to soak up the sun. Beaches such as Clifton, Table View, Long Beach,
Kommetjie, Muizenberg, Strand, Llundudno, Sandy Bay (a naturalist or nudist beach) and Fish
Hoek offer visitors fantastic summer holidays with much to do and see.
Generally False Bay's water is warmer than
Table Bay on the western side of the Cape Peninsula, but both bays offer safe swimming beaches. Cape Town is a city
closed in by two bays (False Bay and Table Bay) the city life is
cosmopolitan and is an experience not to be missed by travelers visiting
South Africa. This city has a lot to offer travelers.
The Cape peninsula is well
known as a surfing and wind surfing destination with numerous surf spots on
both the Western and Eastern bay of the Peninsula. Sailing is
another favorite sport and regattas are often held around the Peninsula.
Yacht clubs such as Gordon's Bay, Simonstown, Royal Cape (021 421 1354)
attract yachtsmen from around the world. Summer regattas are held on
Wednesdays.
Hout Bay is the home of the
Cape Snoek (a similar fish to Barracuda) industry and the picturesque Kalk Bay is home to colourful fishing boats and "salted"
fishermen bringing home fresh fish from the oceans almost daily.
The Victoria & Alfred
Waterfront has become a major tourist attraction offering tourists a
wide variety of shops and some fantastic restaurants offering all the opportunity to
share in the atmosphere of this South African port.
The Peninsula is also home
to the smallest of the world's six floral kingdoms. Come enjoy our
fields of blooming flowers in Spring (August - September) in the Cape of
Good Hope Nature Reserve or further up the Western Cape. Proteas and fynbos
are abundant.
Golfers have a choice of fine golf courses situated along the mountain
slopes or along the beach front, examples include, Steenberg Golf Estate,
Milnerton, Durbanville.
Cape Town lays
clasped between two bays, False Bay toward the East and Table Bay toward
the west. The city itself is
lined with historical buildings, botanical gardens, craft and flea markets,
shopping malls and if you are here to taste our wines - most wineries are
found within 30 minutes drive from the city. The modern skyline of Cape
Town CBD is back dropped by the beautiful Table Mountain that towers over
the city, Table mountain is visible from a distance of over 100km when
approaching the city by sea.
The city of Cape Town has also long been considered as the gay capital of
South Africa and a number of establishments proudly support the gay
community. See the
Pink Map and Cape Town Gay Guide for more information. These are available
